An addiction is terrible. A gambling addiction is no different than any other addiction. It is the addiction of the optimist. The gambler who is addicted really believes that they are away from hitting the big bet. It is a belief system that fuels a gambling addiction.
American's by their nature are risk takers. We are taught to risk taking in the school and the most successful members of our society are risk takers. This fuels the gambling addict belief system that they can succeed if they still have a chance to take. The problem is there seems to be no filters work. The filter that is supposed to kick in and say "I can't take a chance with this money" because I have to feed my children or my pay rent. They just lay their money really to believe they are a good calculated risk with their last few dollars, and sometimes they win, which only further fuels the belief that they intended to have continued to win. Unfortunately, the behavior repeated over and over again until there is nothing more to fix on a bet. Just like an alcoholic is of the opinion that they are doing to control the gambling addict. Even after they have lost members of their families and their homes that they still believe that if they just would have made the right bet everything would be different. We live in a society where money is very much appreciated and unfortunately it's the wrong messages sent.
There is a certain amount of refusal to take responsibility that emerges with the gambling addict. They accuse "bad luck" or base their losses on superstitious faith but very rarely choose "bad choices" or "irresponsible behaviour" as one of the causes of losing everything. It's really sad to see someone believe in something only to lose it all based on the conviction so hard. A gambling addiction can easily tear families apart, making everyone in great debt. It can also be illegal activity on the part of the addict, try to find extra money to gamble away.
There is help for the gambling addict. There are organisations that are built around the addict addiction, face the responsibility and the development of a new thought process to help a gambling addict for the reconstruction of their life to help. The process doesn't happen overnight, it is a constant battle, but to get things under control is possible. The first step with an addiction is recognize that there is a problem. This may include beloved of step in and help the individual to see what gambling has done to their life and what it has done to the lives of other people.
The best way to prevent a possible addiction to gambling is never begin. It is difficult to avoid the temptation to win millions of dollars from a $ 1 wager in the lottery, or to win thousands of dollars in a slot machine. But if you know yourself and you know it can be a problem for you, then just completely not begin. It is much easier to prevent bad behaviour than it is to cure them.
